8 Ways to tell your Kids "I love you"

Perfect for Valentine's Day or for any day.

1. Say it to them. Do you tell your children you love them? Especially your older ones? It can be easy to live under the assumption that they simply know how much they are loved, but often children need the words, the reassurance that yes they are indeed valued and loved. Make it a habit every day to tell them I love you - and keep it going - especially as they get older and are in the teen years.

2. Write them a note. Again, a truly simple way to express love, but take a moment and scrawl some simple things that you love about your child on it. Make it a priority to point out ways that they bless you - maybe it is their smile or the fact that they always make their beds or that they are on time or that you just like being around them. That matters.

3. Make their favorite meal. Sometimes we get into a rut of always serving the same thing or not thinking about what our family loves the most. Make one night a week the night that you serve something that they want to eat and not you. A simple gesture, but it makes a huge difference. If you have a large family like I do this is also a very simple way to devote attention to each person. Another fun thing to do - especially if you have younger ones - is t omake fun place cards or menus for each meal. And for the olders? Simply involve them in the meal prep and planning.

4. Schedule one on one time. I have had to be ultra intentional with my one on one times with my children. A very simple thing that they love to do is to go with me on my weekly grocery run (Which is a combo of Costco - where they love the samples, Trader Joe's, and Super Target). Often I'll take them to get a cup of coffee or a treat at Starbucks and I'll let them linger in the stores and look around. I have grown to truly love those moments spent together in the store - very sweet memories. My Elijah is especially fun to take to Costco as he gets overwhelmed and excited each time by just the shear size of the place. When you have that time you'll get a glimpse into their world and their hearts.

5. Give them your time. In little ways. When they talk to you look at them in their eyes and really listen. I know you have a ton on your plate and maybe don't have time for that drawing or to hear about the animals in the jungle book or all of that - but here's the deal - make time. Become interested in what they have to say and what they have to do. Those things matter to them - they want you to be excited about what they are learning and if you are always to busy they will learn to not come to talk with you. Listen. And give time.

6.Turn off the media. My husband told me a statistic that he had read regarding people and their smart phones - that most people are never more than three feet from their phones most of the time. Imagine that - three feet. I know how distracting it can be. You hear the ding of an alert and you just want to check the one thing and then it becomes that you have to send an email back and then more and more. Turn off your media for a bit. And set media parameters. Our family loves media, but I know that we need boundaries. Every once in a while have a media free night - play games, talk, sit in the living room and just be together. It's balance - and they just want your attention - bless them with it. Undivided.

7. Don't complain about the extra work. I know laundry is work. Trust me, I know - doing laundry for nine is a rather daunting task. But, I've also learned to not complain about the laundry to my children. I am blessed to have a family to do laundry for - and you are blessed with the same. I know it's work, but if that work was suddenly gone you would miss folding those shirts, shorts, and mismatched socks. Don't complain. Remember my words about why vacuuming should always be beautiful.

8. Be grateful. Develop a posture, an attitude, in your home that is simply grateful that you are a family. If your home has an atmosphere of discontent, grumbling, and unhappiness then that is what will constantly be perceived and felt. Be absolutely grateful. Does that mean you have a facade of happiness on? Absolutely not. What it means is that even when things aren't perfect that you are still allowing yourself the ability to see the good things in the midst.

Eight very simple ways that can bless your children and to let them know how much they are valued and loved. Make sure to step back in the middle of your busy and appreciate them.

And if nothing else, make sure to always always always do point number one.

those fleeting rocking chair days

I knew it was coming.

Samuel, little Samuel, was wandering around the living room in those favorite monkey pajamas with the orange super soft shirt. Every once in a while he'd put his head down on the couch and take a quick rest. I was watching him. That little one, up a bit too late, trying so hard to stay awake.

Samuel? Samuel do you want to rock with mama?

He looked up, in those sweet little jammies, and shook his head no.

Wake. Wake time.

I just let him play while glimpses of the sun faded into the west. He kept playing, sneaking little peeks at me sitting in the rocking chair watching him, hoping for just a couple more minutes of time before bed.

Samuel.

Little eyes look at me. Worried, just a bit.

Samuel. Samuel come rock in the chair with mama.

And he came. Running through the room, over to me, and let me scoop him up. I gathered up that little one, nestled him in my arms, and started to rock him. He rested his head on my shoulder, and I patted his back. We rocked. Back and forth.

I knew it would be short.

He's growing up. He's busy and sees what he wants to do. I knew, I knew right then I was to savor these early evening minutes of him being absolutely content to rock with me.

Remember.

Remember him. Remember him now. Little, in my arms, rocking away. Wanting to be with me.

And then it was done.

No bed. Not tired. Wake time, mama.

I let him down, and watched those little monkey printed pants wander back to the pile of John Deere tractors in the corner, and I sighed just a bit.

Soon these rocking days will be done.

Gone.

So tonight, tonight, tonight I rested in those minutes where I was blessed to rock my Samuel.

Grab those moments, I tell myself over and over. Grab them. Slow down.

Slow down.

After a couple more minutes, I gathered him up, carried him up the stairs and brought him to his room. Now, there was no more fighting that inevitable it's time for bed surrender. We stood at the edge of his bed, and I sang him a little song, and then tucked him up.

Love you, Samuel.

Love you, mama.

Forever.

the love challenge. {includes a free download}

Love.

It's all around today. Love, love, love. We stop, take a breath, and look at those around us, those who we love, and intentionally let them know that we love and value them. The routine is broken, the normal adjusted, as we pass out sweet treats and little notes scrawled on pink and red glitter paper, and bless those we love with little bits of our heart. And chocolate. Yes, plenty of chocolate.

I look at my children and remember that they need moments and reminders of how loved they are throughout their days. Not just on one day in the middle of February. But, throughout the weeks.

Love is for everyday.

The challenge? Let's choose to record {and to see} the little things that we love about those who we are blessed to share our lives with. I love that you did the dishes right away. I love when you read to your siblings. I love when you ask me how I'm doing. I love the stack of toys that you invented and created. I love when you pick your clothes out. I love how you laugh. I love you. I love you for being you. Think of the gift in celebrating the good. Often, I'll gather one in my arms and whisper to them - I love being your momNot just a mom, but their mom.

So, join with me in a love challenge. I've included a simple download for you to print out -- it's an I love you reminder card for your loved ones. Look for the good and bless your loved ones with a beautiful list emphasizing those sweet moments that you love - notes of joy, and goodness, and love - the real important things.

Click here for the link -Stuff I Love - it will pull you to a google doc page, save the document, and then print. Once printed you can simply cut the page in half and you're good to go.

luv

Yesterday, this sweet guy of mine was up to something.

I could hear him running around the house while I sat at the table teaching Grace.

When I got up to find out what he was doing this is what I found sprinkled around.

He's awesome.

And I luv love him.

Post-it notes are a fave at our home.
The stack doesn't last long -- and that's okay.
I'll take notes scattered throughout the house any day.

little blue eyes

whisper to me
what you're thinking

share with me
how you see
 things
as beautiful

that we mistake
as weeds

sweet one
with your innocent heart
let me learn your secrets

but let me still
hold you
care for you
carry you

while you still fit

little one
little one

i love you
