In the process I've lost today.
In my prayers I've been reminded of several truths.
1) Time is finite. Only the Lord knows the number of our days. While planning and preparing has a definite purpose in life if it takes away from me being present then it must be tempered down. I've written before about how I have the tendency to utter, "in a minute" to my children -- and then the minute never comes. Keeping the idea that this moment, this day, is a gift in the forefront of my mind helps me keep perspective. There's less "in a minutes" and more doing.
2) This too shall pass. I was reminded of that phrase while blog-reading. I came across a blog or an article in my homeschooling planning quest. In that blog, the author talked about the phrase -- this too shall pass. (I'm sorry I don't have the article link. If you are the author or know the author please inform me.) So often I've looked at those four words as words used in difficult and negative times. Yet, just last week I was convicted to think of those words in all times. Good and bad. Yes, I have many, many, many days that are challenging. Homeschooling is hard. It really is. Being a mother and wife takes work. There's finances. And schedules. Those things will pass. But, this time will pass as well. I've found myself stuck in overwhelm over daily life forgetting that this day, this time will pass. There's always tomorrow. Or next hour. Antithetical to point one? If they were side by side yes....but keeping the idea that time is finite and it will pass creates this healthy balance of being aware and present today.
just had to show you part of our chart
You see, my friends, I needed to be reminded of the beauty in today. Today might be my last day on this earth. I don't want to spend my time angry, or worrying, or sullen, or moody, or ungrateful, or overwhelmed, or overworked, or crabby, or short-tempered, or forgetting. I want to be alive. I want to be grateful, loving, peaceful, kind, present, living aware of tomorrow, remembering yesterday and embracing today.
Today is a gift. Use it wisely.

Such a good reminder for ME, sweet momma of mine! Now I'm gonna head upstairs and take some pics of the apple-crisp-making-adventure.
Love you! :-)

This post brought to mind something that my dad says, that I would like to share with you. He says: love is a more excellent way to live. And I think that is something that we all need to remember. So thank you for this post!

Thank you for the wisdom.
It's awesome that you're going through the Old Testament. However, I feel obligated to warn you of Leviticus 15 and Ezekial 23.=P Just sayin'.
Oh, so many times have I told my siblings "In a minute!" when they want me to run through the sprinkler, go on a walk, or even put a puzzle together with them. Time is something we can never get back, no matter how hard we may want to, no matter how hard we try. Your post went straight to my heart, Rachel, and it convicted me of MY sins in this area. Thank you for reminding me of the preciousness of time.
Love,

Ahh yes... those chapters....we're actually using the Greenleaf Guide to Old Testament History and it's very tactful. And, I've learned to have an editing eye for those younger ones. :)
Thanks, Sarah!
such TRUTH! thank you for sharing this wisdom with me. i feel like #'s 1 and 2 are always conflicting in my mind, but you explained it all perfectly - it's all about balance. hello! that has never occurred to me; but that is just how we should live. and the Bible first! it's so beautiful to see how the Lord equips us for the day through His word. even though there are days that seem like mere survival, i want to be alive! : ) thank you sweet friend for sharing your beautiful heart!
Oh how I understand! I used to spend so much time planning things that I had very little time left to do the things I planned to do. Thankfully, I have been adopting a new approach... pray for guidance, spend a little time planning, and when it is time to live/act - DO IT! What ever isn't planned get's winged. The amazing thing is that usually the spontaneous, unplanned activities and lessons turn out to be the best ones! I think it is because those are the ones that I rely upon the Lord to help me with instead of forgetting to ask for help and inspiration because I think I am already ready. It has been an amazing and wonderful discovery which has taken so much stress out of my life, and made my Father in Heaven my absolute partner in life. And with Him as my partner - everything goes so much better! :D
Thanks for the reminders. Corine :D
Rachel, Once again your post struck such a chord with me. I get sooo caught up in the busy-ness of the everday. I especially loved your last paragraph. I'm with you on that one. I don't want to be grumpy, frustrated, stressed. I want to take joy and find peace in each day.
Thank you for the encouragement!
Amen, now I'm going to get off of here, grab some tea and read my Bible! Thanks for the conviction!!! LOL!
Often I have felt this way, I am so grateful for your post and I love that you're reading bible with the kids - awesome. :)
I learned something about the enemy recently, he wants us to be glued to the past, or worried about the future because, having us in such a state will cause us to not serve God correctly Today. I am reminded of two scriptures:
Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, Philippians 3:13
&
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34
Thank you for this post, love. Blessings to you!

thank you for this reminder!
What amazing comfort these verses give! Praying!
Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
